Convento do Beato | Lisbon – Portugal
Located in the eastern part of Lisbon, the Convento do Beato originated as a small 15th-century hermitage, becoming over time an important religious, social and economic landmark of the city. After a long industrial transformation throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the complex was recovered by RISCO Architects and transformed into a new contemporary residential complex that preserves and enhances the existing historic heritage.
Depending on the condition of each building, the project adopted different conservation strategies. In some cases the original masonry, timber and steel structures were retained and integrated; in others only the historic facade was preserved. A new building was discreetly inserted within the complex to conceal access to the underground car park, avoiding visual interference with the historic context.
The intervention is organised around two large landscaped courtyards that define the collective spaces and the new identity of the complex. Green areas play a central role in the project, creating continuity between architecture, historical memory and contemporary life. The first phase of the intervention, developed around the main courtyard, was completed and inaugurated in 2024.
