Ernesto do Canto | Ponta Delgada – Portugal

Located within a consolidated urban context in the São Pedro neighbourhood of Ponta Delgada, the Ernesto do Canto residential complex occupies two opposing plots at different altimetric levels. The project exploits this level difference to raise part of the building and create a qualified void beneath the built volume, introducing a concept of urban permeability that expands the perception of public space.

The architecture develops around a system of open spaces and public and semi-private internal gardens that define the character of the complex. The central void becomes a place of quiet and sociality, while remaining immersed in the urban vitality of the neighbourhood. The different architectural volumes establish a continuous reciprocal relationship, evoking the relational dimension typical of neighbourhood fabric.

The structures are connected by a naturally ventilated semi-underground car park that contributes to the environmental performance of the intervention. The project is conceived as an introspective architecture, capable of enhancing the shared outdoor spaces as a natural extension of private living. From a typological standpoint, the complex houses apartments from one to five bedrooms, encouraging a diversification of family units and promoting social dynamics essential to the construction of cohesive urban communities.
