W46 | Lisbon – Portugal

The W46 project is located in Lisbon, along Rua Washington in the São Vicente neighbourhood, sensitively addressing the dialogue between architecture and the urban landscape. Lioz Arquitetura's intervention subverts the original layout of the 1930s building, inverting the relationship between facades and opening the social spaces toward the river panorama of the Tagus.

The new terrace, rebuilt in place of the fire escape, projects toward the panorama like a small urban promontory. The interior spaces have been reimagined according to a contemporary typology with two bedrooms with private bathrooms, while the central rooms house service functions. On the top floor, the pitched roof has been transformed into a penthouse with mezzanine, including an open living area, a bedroom and a bathroom.

The project enhances the original elements such as the window frames, the central staircase and some load-bearing masonry walls, combining them with new independent and lightweight volumes: staircases, kitchen islands, panels and pivot doors. The choice of materials favours stone and wood in their most natural expression, paired with golden metallic details that reflect the warm light of Lisbon. The intervention transforms the building into a place of balance between memory and modernity.
