Tiara Château Hotel Mont Royal | Chantilly – France
Nestled in the Chantilly Forest in the municipality of La Chapelle-en-Serval (Oise), just 50 km from Paris and 20 minutes from Charles de Gaulle airport, the Tiara Château Hotel Mont Royal rises atop a wooded hill as a magnificent Louis XVI-style country residence. The castle was commissioned in 1907 by French composer Fernand Halphen, who having rejected an Anglo-Norman project by René Sergent and a first medieval-style project chose Guillaume Tronchet's second plan: a castle celebrating hunting on the outside and music on the inside, completed in 1911 and considered a great architectural success of its time
The castle was converted into a hotel in 1989 by Jean-Pierre Hermier, and in the 1990s the Concorde group added a new wing of 80 rooms. Upon joining the Tiara Hotels & Resorts collection, the building was given renewed identity through a renovation project entrusted to the PPS studio of architect Pilar Paiva de Sousa. When acquired, the complex comprising the original château and the guestroom wing had become significantly altered and lacking in identity: successive renovations without stylistic coherence had stripped the original building of its character.
The PPS intervention prioritised natural light and spatial clarity to harmonise classical, palatial style with contemporary comfort. In the listed public areas, the architect remained faithful to the Louis XVI style in furniture, lighting and patterns while opting for a reinterpretation of classical motifs and an innovative use of textures and colours. Guest rooms in both buildings were refurbished with distinct approaches while maintaining continuity through French-inspired furniture combined with modern colours, patterns and textures; bathrooms were renovated and nine additional rooms were created in the attic of the new wing. Extensive technical works were also carried out (water supply, HVAC, window frame repair, skylight and pool flooring restoration).
The complex today features 109 rooms and suites, the L’Opéra restaurant (housed in a faithful replica of the Paris Opera hall), Le Stradivarius Bar (in the original château smokehouse), 10-12 meeting rooms for up to 300 guests, a spa with heated indoor pool, fitness centre, tennis court, pétanque court and even a private helipad.
