Apfelhotel Torgglerhof | South Tyrol – Italy
Nestled among apple orchards, meadows and mountains at the mouth of the Passeier Valley in the village of Saltaus (St. Martin in Passeier), the Torgglerhof has deep roots in South Tyrol's centuries-old apple cultivation tradition. With the new generation of the Pichler family at the helm, this historically layered place embarked on a remarkable transformation: in 2014, noa* – network of architecture from Bolzano and Berlin won a design competition for expanding the existing structure, launching a multi-phase renovation process that would turn Apfelhotel Torgglerhof into South Tyrol's first dedicated apple hotel
The design concept by noa* is the apple’s annual cycle bloom, harvest, refinement and repose expressed throughout every space in the hotel. In the first phase (completed April 2016), the old barn adjacent to the main building was stripped back and converted: behind the preserved original façade, exposed struts and beams dialogue with glazed loggias and large openings, while the new rooms reference the classic apple crate in their finishes. The Apfelsauna an apple-shaped sauna integrated into the green landscape as a gentle hill completes the first phase of the wellness journey.
In the second phase (completed May 2020, 2,890 m²), three new buildings with saddle roofs and dark anthracite wood rhombus-pattern façades a contemporary reinterpretation of traditional wooden struts house 18 new Garden Suites. The new Brunnenhaus wellness centre features an indoor-outdoor pool, adults-only sauna lounge, steam bath with a bowl-shaped ceiling collecting droplets into a clay pot, and a natural-stone drinking fountain. Wood, natural fibres and earthy tones define every space; smoked oak parquet flows continuously across floors, steps and shelves.
