Adler Lodge Ritten | South Tyrol
"It is divinely beautiful here on the Renon." So wrote Sigmund Freud to his colleague Jung in a letter of 1911, penned while holidaying on this sun-drenched plateau with his wife Martha. More than a century later, the Sanoner family chose this same highland at 1,200 metres of altitude, overlooked by the UNESCO-listed Dolomites, to open the Adler Lodge Ritten on 27 June 2019: an exclusive retreat set within a glade of larches and fir trees, reachable in 30 minutes by car from Bolzano or, more poetically, by cable car followed by a walk through the forest
The Lodge was conceived by Andreas and Klaus Sanoner together with architect Hugo Demetz and studio G22 Projects of Lana, and built in sustainable bio-construction by specialist firm ASTER GmbH of San Genesio, using local natural materials certified to the CasaClima Nature standard. The guiding concept is “lodge in nature and nature inside the lodge”: the main building and the 20 A-frame chalets are clad in black-painted timber to minimise visual impact within the forest, blending into the woodland like an invisible village. The chalet interiors, designed by Karin Sanoner, use untreated spruce and larch timbers and oak flooring, while the walls of the Main Lodge are distinguished by high-relief printed timber panels bearing tribal motifs, a technical invention by Hugo Demetz executed by South Tyrolean master craftsmen.
The property comprises 20 independent A-frame chalets with private sauna overlooking the natural lake, 20 junior suites in the lateral wings of the main building with private bio-sauna, and 4 suites. The Main Lodge houses the reception, a large lounge with central fireplace, a wellness area with a year-round panoramic infinity pool, two saunas (Finnish and a woodland herbarium sauna), and the restaurant led by chef Hannes Pignater, whose retractable roof opens to allow guests to dine literally under the stars. The formula is exclusively all-inclusive, covering full board, beverages and a rich weekly programme of outdoor and indoor activities for all seasons.
